This paper aims at investigating alternating receptions of the outcomes of the theological debate on poverty during the 13th century, amid the phase of progressive disappearance of the free "beaterios" of virgins and widows, absorbed into homogeneous realities belonging to male mendicant orders. Special attention will be devoted to the history of the "beaterio" placed at the origin of the second branch of the Order of Mercy, and to the Catalan noblewoman María de Cervelló, to whom later biographical renditions attributed the role of initiator of the "rama femenina". Based on such hagiographic remodelling efforts, which also involved other female figures, one can study the hierarchy’s determination to dictate through specific ascetical paradigms a very definite theology of women’s religious life. Far more than adoption, it involved the imposition of canonical and disciplinary forms that entailed the assumption of normative constraints that were far more binding and utterly distant from the ones conceived to suit themselves by those women.
