This article investigates an important moment in the history of Lullism in the decades after the publication of the famous Salzinger edition of Ramon Llull’s Opera omnia (Mainz, 1721–1742). The article shows how the German Recollect Franciscan Honoré Cordier (1707–1778) started out as Scotist but then turned to Lullism, a turn that prompted him to revise his own former defense of the formal distinction. In his Lullist works, Cordier opts for a strong conception of the unity and identity of the divine essence, one that does not allow for any distinctions prior to the work of an intellect. With this position, Cordier’s version of Lullism ends up being closer to Nominalism than to Scotism. I pay particular attention to his critical encounter with the Lullist Sebastian Krenzer, whose three-volume scholastic presentation of Lullism was placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1754. Cordier argued that genuine Lullism was not affected by this condemnation. He set out to defend Lullism vis-à-vis both contemporary scholasticism, including Scotism, and Krenzer’s Pseudo-Lullism.
