"Reassessing the roots of Scoto-Lullism: the case of Jerome of Prague and Nicholas of Cusa"

In recent years there has been a revival of interest in the movement of Scoto-Lullism which flourished in the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Central to this movement was the use of Scotus’ formal distinction to structure Lull’s understanding of the divine dignities and correlatives and their dynamic Trinitarian unfolding. This paper offers a reassessment of the roots of Scoto-Lullism by paying attention to two of the earliest representatives of the movement. The first is the Hussite theologian and martyr Jerome of Prague. While the Neo-Platonic and Scotist framework of Jerome’s metaphysics has been frequently pointed out its connection to Lullism remains almost entirely unknown. The second is the Renaissance polymath Nicholas of Cusa. Cusa’s own Lullism has been extensively explored but the genesis of this is usually traced to his interaction with Heimeric de Campo in Cologne. By contrast, this paper revives an older thesis which em-phasised the importance of the Paduan and Catalonian traditions of Lullism in the formation and shaping of Cusa’s dynamic method.
