This chapter implicitly argues that a direct, ecclesiologically consistent line of descent can be traced from the Synods of Aachen via the Decretum Gratiani to certain statements in Henry of Susa’s Summa aurea. It views all of these developments as transformations of a t(r)opologically isomorphic object. It also claims that, though the laicus religiosus may be a necessary condition, it is not a necessary and sufficient condition whereby to explain the life and works of Ramon Llull.
